NBA free agency rumors roundup: Dwight Howard meets with Rockets, Josh Smith talks to Pistons

NBA free agency is underway, and the biggest storyline is where Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard ends up. The courting began immediately at the outset of free agency early Monday morning, with the Houston Rocketscalling in the big dogs as part of their presentation.

In addition to much of the front office, as well as James Harden and Chandler Parsons, the Rockets called on Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler and Yao Ming to sell Howard on the benefits of playing in Houston. The Rockets are believed to be the current frontrunners for Howard, and they're confident that they'll land him.

An interesting note is that the Rockets weren't the first team to talk to Howard when free agency opened. Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak snuck in some face time with Howard before Houston's presentation. The Lakers are clearly going all-out to re-sign Howard, and SB Nation's Lakers blog Silver Screen and Roll explains why the big man should remain in Los Angeles.

Josh Smith meets with Pistons, but no offer made

The Detroit Pistonsmet withAtlanta Hawks free agent big man Josh Smith at the beginning of free agency, and at first, they were expected to make a "substantial" offer. However, Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears reports that the talks were simply "productive" and that no offer was made.

The Pistons almost certainly won't offer Smith the max, but they should have cap space for a lucrative offer. That doesn't please some of the guys over at SB Nation's Pistons blog Detroit Bad Boys, who would much rather see Andre Iguodala signed instead. Speaking of Iguodala...

Andre Iguodala to be offered contract extension from Nuggets

Spears reports that Iguodala will speak with the Pistons, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks on Monday, but Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski also says that the Denver Nuggets are preparing to offer the free agent wing a contract extension when they meet with him on Monday. Iguodala opted out of a $16 million contract for next season, but a hefty extension could certainly lure him back. SB Nation's Nuggets blog Denver Stiffs hopes that Iguodala sticks around for the long haul.

Pelicans interested in Tyreke Evans, Kevin Martin

In addition to Iguodala, the New Orleans Pelicans are looking hard at Kings restricted free agent Tyreke Evans and Oklahoma City Thunder free agent Kevin Martin. The Pelicans met with Evans early Monday morning, and TNT's David Aldridge reports that they were prepared to make a big offer. SB Nation's Pelicans blog At The Hive says the team could potentially clear nearly $13 million in cap space to sign Evans to an offer sheet outright.

If New Orleans is unable to land Evans or Iguodala, it will push hard for Martin, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. The Thunder likely won't be able to re-sign Martin due to luxury tax consequences. Martin is also expected to receive interest from the Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Milwaukee Bucks, according to Spears.

J.J. Redick likely out in Milwaukee, O.J. Mayo meets with Timberwolves

Two of the better shooting guard prospects in this free agency class in J.J. Redick and O.J. Mayo will probably be switching teams. Redick is unlikely to return to Milwaukee, and Wojnarowski reports that the Bucks are exploring sign-and-trade possibilities. SB Nation's Bucks blog Brew Hoop says that while losing Redick would feel like a huge waste due to what has happened with Tobias Harris in Orlando, the split may wind up being for the better.

As for Mayo, Spears reports that he met with the Timberwolves at the beginning of free agency and has several more meetings scheduled for Monday. Mayo is also expected to meet with the Pistons, Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers and Utah Jazz.

2013 NBA Free Agency: Tyreke Evans to meet with Pistons

Jeez, it's been nearly three hours since the Detroit Pistons were associated with a high-priced wing on the free agent market.

But that's over now as Sam Amick is reporting that Tyreke Evans has a meeting lined up with the Pistons in Los Angeles.

Evans is a victim of his own rookie success as he exploded on the scene to win rookie of the year as Sacramento's PGOTF in 2009-10 and had trouble replicating his success in his sophomore year.

He was eventually moved off the ball and even spent time at small forward as the mess that is the Kings brain trust couldn't quite figure out what to do with him.

But he turned in his strongest season to date in 2012-13 -- yes, even better than his rookie year. His shooting percentages climbed up to near 48 percent and he added five rebounds and 1.5 steals.

He's no longer asked to be a distributor, but he's now a quietly effective slasher and scorer. Superstar? No. Very good player who is only 23 years old? Yes.

That being said he'll never be confused for a three-point shooter, so if the Pistons were seriously interested in Evans to man the SG or SF positions, they would have to pair him with wing players that had three-point range. Calderon and Redick, perhaps?

He joins a long line of athletic wings Dumars has been associated with that have questionable range -- Evans, Josh Smith, Andre Iguodala, OJ Mayo. He talked before and after the draft about needing to add shooters that complement Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond.

Bu so far I'm seeing a lot of athletic scorers that rely on cutting to the basket to get their points. Rethink, Dumars, rethink! That being said, Evans might be the most offensively accomplished of the above group.

And as an added bonus, Evans' nickname is Reke, which lends itself to all kinds of great Game of Thrones jokes.

UPDATE: Word on Twitter is that Tyreke Evans was presented a sizable offer sheet by the New Orleans Pelicans. The idea is that Evans would come off the bench Manu-style as featured bench scorer.

While I think that plan would last about as long as it took to trade Eric Gordon's monster contract or his inevitable next injury, the Pelicans are throwing around serious money.

Hopefully that is too rich for Joe Dumars to approach. I can understand him at $8-$9 million for four, maybe more for three, but not $11 for four.

NBA free agency 2013: Pelicans make lucrative offer sheet to Tyreke Evans

20130414_pjc_ad1_664

Ready for another big splash this summer, the New Orleans Pelicans "made a lucrative, four-year offer to Tyreke Evans in last night's meeting" with the restricted free agent, USA Today's Sam Amick reports. It's worth $44 million, NBA.com's David Aldridge adds.

Should Evans accept the sizable offer, the Sacramento Kings will be forced to make a tough decision on arguably their best player. After making a qualifying offer to the former Rookie of the Year before the deadline, Sacramento retains the right to match all offers made to Evans.

After trading for Jrue Holiday on draft night, it's clear New Orleans hopes to make major progress in its first season under the Pelicans nickname. Adding Evans to a roster that already features Holiday, Anthony Davis and Eric Gordon would make New Orleans one of the most entertaining young teams in the league.

Considering the ups and downs in Evans' career, it's easy to forget that he doesn't turn 24 until September. Finally settling into a wing role with Sacramento last season, he averaged 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals in 65 games.

Gsom-open-thread

Today's avalanche of tantalizing rumors and sordid innuendo are deserving of their very own thread. Talk about free agency signings, trade rumors, Dwight Howard paparazzi-ing, making fun of the Lakers and Knicks, fake trades, movies you've enjoyed recently — whatever you want, anything goes. I'll try to keep things updated for awhile as they come in.

From Woj:

Oklahoma City has begun an aggressive pursuit of Philadelphia free-agent guard Dorell Wright, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Wright, 27, averaged 9.2 points in 72 games for the Sixers a season ago. The Thunder are working to stay below the luxury tax threshold this season, searching for bargain contributors able to spread the floor and make shots. The return of Kevin Martin to the Thunder appears unlikely, unless the market for him dries up completely and he has to return at a far lower rate than he's trying to find, league sources said.

MTII on Warriors/Howard:

“Are you kidding?” one source said. “He’s the best center in the game.”

Rusty Simmons on Warriors/Howard, but also some Jarrett Jack intrigue:

The Warriors are also open to doing a sign-and-trade deal with Jack if it's obvious that they can't convince him to stay in a place where he'll get less money and fewer minutes.

This kid has been killing it on Twitter — staking out the Dwight meeting hotel and scooping even the best NBA scribes:

More MTII, this time on Jarrett Jack:

Warriors management met with point guard Jarrett Jack on Saturday, according to league sources, to begin discussions to re-sign the free agent...

If the Warriors lose Jack, a couple sources said Darren Collison is on the list of possible replacements. The one hurdle: Golden State may only have the bi-annual exception to offer. That amounts to about two years, $5 million. Is that enough to get Collison?

Meanwhile, the Pelicans may have lost their damned minds:

NBA trade rumors: Pelicans looking to trade Robin Lopez

20121029_kkt_su8_738

The New Orleans Pelicans will look to move big man Robin Lopez in order to free up cap space to pursue Tyreke Evans, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports. The team reportedly made a highly lucrative contract offer to the Sacramento Kings restricted free agent on Monday.

With reports pegging the value of New Orleans' offer to Evans at $48 million, the Pelicans need to clear additional payroll in order to stay below the salary cap. Moving Lopez, who's set to earn over $5 million next season, would give the Pelicans enough room to sign Evans outright or complete a sign-and-trade.

Signed last offseason to a partially guaranteed three-year contract, Lopez started all 82 games for the Hornets in 2012-13. He set career-high figures across the board, averaging 11.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 26 minutes per contest.

NBA Free Agency - The 2013 Version

20130224_jel_ax3_351

Chris Paul has already taken himself off the market agreeing to terms with the Los Angeles Clippers.

I'm still inclined to say Dwight Howard goes to Houston, and I've thought that for quite some time. The only other place that could still be in contention in my mind is the Los Angeles Lakers, but moving forward I don't see him and Mike D'Antoni ever working well together.

Andrew Bynum - I'd give him a one year contract, or at most 2 year, with possibly team options beyond that. But that is a whole lot of gamble right there. No way I touch that if I was in the top 6 of the conferences last season. Someone has to take a chance on him, and if he is healed and can return to form you all of a sudden might find your team in the playoff hunt.

Andre Iguodala - I'd give the Nuggets a 50% chance of retaining Iggy. I struggle to agree that he's a MAX CONTRACT kind of player as well. But he could really be a good fit with the Denver Nuggets if they figure out a way to keep him in my opinion.

Josh Smith - My bias here - can't stand his game. He's a good shot blocker, but a chucker on offense. I don't like chuckers. At all. And not only is he a chucker, but he can't hit a free throw. He'd drive me nuts if he was on my team. And he's another guy who I really think is going to be overpaid by someone.

Tyreke Evans - He's got an offer sheet from the New Orleans Pelicans he's agreed to for 4 years for $44 million. Another guy getting over paid in today's market. But he at least has some room for growth still. I don't see Sacto matching this offer, I certainly wouldn't. But Ranadive may want to make some sort of "statement" for whatever reason, so it wouldn't be a surprise to me if he stays with the Sacramento Kings.

David West - I've loved his game for a long time. Guy works hard every night. He can hit a jumper, doesn't shy from clutch shots, rebounds, and plays solid defense. I don't see him leaving the Indiana Pacers. He'd be a really good Spur though.

Nikola Pekovic - I think the Minnesota Timberwolves let someone else set the market price for Pek and then match. At least I hope they do. He's really grown on me this past season. The guy is a beast. Not a MAX beast, but a guy I'd really like to see stay in Minnesota. He scores well without having to be the focus of the offense. He takes quality shots, knows his limits, and works incredibly hard. And he's a bruiser on defense.

Andrei Kirilenko - I think the Minnesota Timberwolves would like to keep him, but I don't know that they'll be able to do so. He's so incredibly gifted, but such a fragile player physically. If Denver loses Iggy, I could see AK-47 giving it a go there, but I don't know how they'd make the money work. Tough to guess where he'll land if he moves.

Tiago Splitter - If Houston doesn't win the Howard Sweepstakes, I could see Splitter leaving the San Antonio Spurs but staying in Texas. He plays great defense, doesn't need to be the focus of the offense to score, and works hard every night. A good piece for a lot of teams.

Paul Millsap - I'd love to Millsap find an established playoff team to join where he could come off the bench as the 6th man and fill a lot of minutes through the game. I could see him being incredible in that role. But the question is, will anyone who'll be footing his bill be willing to use him like that?

Tony Allen - I love guys who play defense. But I still don't like Tony Allen. If he could just become more consistent on a single thing on offense, and quit being so annoying, I'd love him. He's another guy who could really benefit from joining a playoff contender. He's not the guy who can get you to the playoffs, but he's the guy who can make the difference if you already have that roster.

Jeff Teague - Teague is a restricted free agent, and unless someone throws silly money at him, I suspect he stays put with the Atlanta Hawks. I think especially so if Josh Smith moves on, which I fully expect.

Brandon Jennings - Stupidly, I think the Milwaukee Bucks will pay whatever it takes to match this restricted free agent's offer sheet. Jennings is a high volume chucker who needs the ball in his hands. A smaller Antoine Walker. Yikes! I don't think my forehead could withstand all the wall pounding it would get if he was on my team. Guy can score in bunches, but at too high of a cost in my opinion.

Al Jefferson - I've seen enough of Big Al to know I'd want nothing to do with him on my team. Yes he can score, and is a solid rebounder. But he makes Dan Marino look fast. And he's a black hole if you throw the ball in to him. But if your team is desperate for a rebounder, you'll be over paying for him some time soon. I don't see him sticking with the Utah Jazz.

Kevin Martin - I really liked Martin's roll for the Oklahoma City Thunder this past season. And I'm going to laugh when he walks here shortly! He scores well, doesn't need to be the focus of the offense at this point in his career, and he makes you pay if you try to double off of him. Great floor spreader, and would be a great piece for a bunch of playoff teams. He's very unlikely to go to a struggling team in my opinion. I think in the right system he's got some good years left, especially as a specialist.

J.R. Smith - I'll personally be surprised to see him leave the New York Knicks. I can't stand his game. He's a chucker. And a knucklehead. He's streaky, and can at times play really good defense. I do love his dunks though.

Manu Ginobili - I don't see Manu going anywhere. What he can contribute to the San Antonio Spurs moving forward will be interesting to see. He didn't have much in the tank in the Finals, and I'm afraid the miles on those wheels are starting to catch up to him. He likely could still be a lethal three point shooter used situationally for a few more years if he wants to hang on for that long. But more and more he's going to be exposed on defense.

Monta Ellis - Chucker. Wouldn't want him on my team. He's going to land on a bad team where he can fill the stat sheet with lots of shots and a fair amount of points. No thanks.

Nate Robinson - I'd give Nate money far before some of the guys above on this list (looking at you Brandon Jennings).

Jarrett Jack - Jack is a GREAT backup point guard. But there is no way I'd make him my starting point guard. If you know how and when to use him, he can be a great tool. I'd love to see him back up Tony Parker in San Antonio. I feel that Pop could really use him well.

Greg Oden - I'd love to see the Spurs land him, and for him to actually get healthy and find a place in the NBA. Another guy who I'd only give a single year or at most two years to, with team options beyond that. Scary how fragile he's shown to be thus far.

Lots of other guys - what do you think? Who goes where? Who gets paid? Who gets over paid? What team(s) have buyers remorse come the All Star Game?

NBA Free Agency rumors: Pelicans' offer to Tyreke Evans can't be that poisonous

$

20130124_jla_ah6_313

The New Orleans Pelicans have structured an offer sheet for Tyreke Evans to be as onerous as possible to match, reports Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee.

While Jones calls it a "poison pill" deal, that's not quite right: the "Poison Pill provision" is a specific rule in the collective bargaining agreement relating to trading players who have signed extensions that have not yet gone into effect. Also, Jones compares Evans' offer to those of Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik. That strikes me as impossible, being that those two were Early Bird restricted free agents with offer sheets signed under the Gilbert Arenas provision. That provision doesn't apply to Evans, who with four years in the league isn't up for Early Bird rights.

The Pelicans could frontload the contract to make it onerous on the new ownership group, though. Here's what a normal free agent four-year, $44 million contract would look like.

2013-14: $10.3 million
2014-15: $10.8 million
2015-16: $11.2 million
2016-17: $11.7 million

NBA rules allow for signing bonuses of up to 15 percent. But they don't affect the cap hit for each year -- that stays normal. It's just the salary paid out that gets changed. Here's how that would if the Pelicans fully frontloaded the deal.

2013-14: $15.2 million
2014-15: $9.1 million
2015-16: $9.6 million
2016-17: $10 million

Again, that's actual money paid out. The signing bonus would be $6.6 million. The cap structure would look the same as a normal deal. The Pelicans could frontload it a bit more by making it a decreasing contract other than the standard increasing one, but that's not a huge deal.

So basically, there's little the Pelicans can do to discourage Sacramento if the Kings are willing to pay that price and have the cashflow to pay out a big signing bonus. There's not Linning or Asiking going on here.

The bigger concern is where Tyreke's head is at. Does he really think this franchise doesn't care about him because it reached out to DeMarcus Cousins (who is not a free agent) first?

First, of course, when the signing begin, be sure to keep track of them on the NBA Free Agent Signing Board!

Now, let's catch up on some rumors:

Hawks-Centric Rumors:

Obviously, everyone knows that Dwight Howard is going to/has met with the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks and Golden State Warriors as well as the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. Howard has stated his decision will come on July 10, the first day to officially sign any offers.

Josh Smith, also met with the Rockets, who told him they would come after him directly with an offer if the Rockets didn't sign Howard, per Y! Sports. The Hawks have also been rumored to want to pursue a sign-and-trade with the Rockets, if Howard signs with Houston.

Tyreke Evans, somewhat forgotten nationally after his rookie year, got an offer from the New Orleans Pelicans for 4 years, 44 million dollars. However, Evans will meet with the Hawks today and also talked to Kings and Pistons yesterday as well.

Andre Iguodala, another Hawks target at the wings, will end up with a stable of suitors for his service, including the Kings, the Pistons, the Nuggets,

A popular Iguodala fallback, Corey Brewer, is also being sought after by the Nuggets, Hawks, Rockets and Pelicans, per Marc Stein.

Zaza Pachulia is being hunted by Milwaukee, Portland and San Antonio, per David Aldridge. The Hawks are still in the mix, of course and DA also mentions his recovery from Achilles surgery is on schedule.

Elsewhere around the league:

Al Jefferson is getting the full court press from the Charlotte Bobcats, says Woj.

Knicks free agent Chris Copeland is getting a look from the Indiana Pacers, from Y! Sports.

As the Nuggets prepare for anything with Iguodala and Brewer free agents, they could go after Memphis free agent Tony Allen. Woj says if Memphis can't hold onto Allen to expect the Nuggets to be a real threat.

The Wizards are hoping to hold onto Martell Webster by using some of their Mid-Level Exception, per David Aldridge.

Jarrett Jack has been contacted by the Warriors, Nuggets and Dallas, per Marc Spears of Y! Sports.

ESPN reports that the Spurs, Heat, Cavaliers, Celtics and Grizzlies are all interested in Greg Oden.

Eric Maynor agreed to a bi-annual exception contract with the Wizards, per our old friend and former Hawks beat writer Michael Lee and confirmed by David Aldridge.

Mike Dunleavy decided to quickly hop onto the Chicago Bulls roster by agreeing to a 2-yr, 6M dollar deal, per Marc Stein.

Andray Blatche has committed to go back to the Nets, broken by Peter Vecsey. Sam Amick later reported that it was for 1.4M, meaning the Wizards, who amnestied him, remains on the hook for about 8M of his salary. Blatche took less from the Nets so he could continue to stick it to the Wizards.

The Jazz made sure Paul Millsapknew they wanted him back, per CBS Sports' Ken Berger.

Minnesota has 4 year offers out to J.J. Redick and Chase Budinger, per Woj. Redick later dined with Clippers' coach Doc Rivers, also Woj.

Budinger is also sought after by the Jazz, Pacers and Grizzlies, per Woj.

The Clippers are interested in O.J. Mayo, per Sam Amick, who also talks about how he could get there. Mayo also met with the Timberwolves, per Marc Spears.

Dorell Wright appears to be a top target for theOklahoma City Thunder, per Woj.

Tyreke Evans reportedly 'impressed' with Kings' presentation

20130701_kkt_ax5_219

How did the Sacramento Kings' meeting with their own restricted free agent Tyreke Evans go on Monday? Cowbell Kingdom's James Ham has the report.

A source with knowledge of his situation says that Evans came away impressed by his meeting with the Kings, which included owner Vivek Ranadivé, general manager Pete D'Alessandro and coach Michael Malone. It believed that the 23-year-old swingman's overall preference is to remain in Sacramento.

It'd be hard not to be impressed by those guys! Of course, every free agent meeting always goes well based on reports. But I think it's important for everyone to remember that this is basically a brand new team in Sacramento. Evans has dealt with a lot of losing, a lot of drama, a lot of discomfort. Mr. V, Malone and Pete D. are able to show a clean break from the old regime. That's potentially huge.

Sam Amick heard similar things.

As noted this morning, the Pelicans' offer of $44 million can't be that poisonous: there's just not a whole lot rival teams can do at this price point to muck things up. So the concern is more convincing Tyreke that Sacramento will make a better long-term basketball home, that the new regime is focused on turning the franchise around and making him a star piece of that.

One other note from the CK piece: it says Tyreke is looking for a four-year deal to become a free agent before his 28th birthday. Pretty smart move by his camp, one that also disarms Sacramento's best counter (which is the fifth year).

Tyreke Evans and the suddenly hot NBA free agent market

$

20130414_pjc_ad1_663

Ignore the fact that a year ago, the owners of the Sacramento Kings were broke. Ignore that the owners were talking to officials in Virginia Beach and Las Vegas about relocation and were openly warring with the Sacramento municipal government, the business community and fans.

Just consider the basketball operations. You had Tyreke Evans, the 2010 Rookie of the Year, eligible for an Early Bird extension that would kick in for 2013-14. He'd dropped off from his R.O.Y. season, but was still pretty valuable and lousy with potential.

Other teams locked up their 2009 draft class point guards. The Philadelphia 76ers locked in Jrue Holiday at $41 million over four years. (He subsequently made his first All-Star team.) The Warriors got a crazy good deal for Stephen Curry at $44 million over four years. (He became a legitimate NBA star -- a superstar? -- this season.) The Nuggets reached a four-year, $48 million deal with Ty Lawson. (He was in the running for an All-Star spot.)

It's safe to say that not getting a deal in 2012 didn't hurt Evans' cause.

Like Evans, Brandon Jennings and Jeff Teague left the 2012 offseason without deals and are now restricted free agents. Evans was the first to strike gold: the New Orleans Pelicans reportedly offered Tyreke $44 million over four years. And he didn't take it -- he took more meetings. So it's safe to say that not getting a deal in 2012 didn't hurt Evans' cause.

Restricted free agency is pretty tricky, and whether to sign the early extension or test the waters is a guessing game on everyone's part. Take the Curry situation for example. A year ago, Curry could have held out for a max offer (closer to $60 million). Or, Golden State could have been frightened off by his chronic ankle injuries and let him get another season under his belt before forking over the dough. But Curry's camp, perhaps guessing that the ankle was not to be trusted, signed a much smaller deal. And the Warriors, perhaps guessing that Curry was on the cusp of a breakout, signed him before he could cross the threshold to obvious max player. The Warriors won. The decisions made by Camp Curry and the Warriors in 2012 ended up sticking the guard with a smaller contract than he deserves (while healthy).

Reactions to Evans' offer: Sactown RoyaltyAt the Hive

It's a game within the game.

The funny thing is that agents and players almost always win. How frequently do we see high-dollar contracts that are relative bargains for teams? Plenty of deals are fair, like those of Holiday and Lawson. Curry's is a bargain. Why do we see so few bargains in the upper ranges? Because the market gets really hot this time of year. When teams step up to meet with free agents, they are looking at the good almost exclusively. The market opens up wide. Instead of negotiating with a player, teams are essentially negotiating against other teams.

And we're a media that does the agents' bidding: we hype up every offer with breathless coverage, make the money as well-known (if not more well-known) than the players' stats. Fans love this stuff: we breathe salary cap info, we keep Larry Coon's FAQs on the nightstand, we stress over poison pills and Bird rights. We as fans fuel the demand for detailed coverage, which leads to agents having an immense voice in the public conversation, which leads to more hype, more info, a hotter bidding war and all of that.

Consider this: after hearing about the Pelicans' offer to Evans, when the Hawks sit down with him on Tuesday, how will they react? If they don't offer a similar or higher number, their fans will know. Maybe their fans will be upset that Atlanta isn't stepping up to pull in a top guard to play with Al Horford. Maybe that pressure won't apply to the Hawks, but myriad teams are said to be interested in Evans. A dollar amount is out there, and it's negotiable in exactly one direction.

That's how the market gets hot, especially in an offseason when lots of teams have cap space. (That will happen more frequently as the new collective bargaining agreement shortened contracts across the board.)

So when it comes to the guessing game, in most situations, it's going to pay off for the player to not be conservative and be willing to test restricted free agency. It worked for Roy Hibbert and Eric Gordon. It's working for Tyreke Evans.

2013 NBA Free Agents: Tyreke Evans to talk to Atlanta Hawks today

20130108_mjr_su5_357

Per Jason Jones, who obviously has an awesome first name but also covers the Kings for the Sacramento Bee, came this bit of news via Twitter last night:

As our NBA Free Agent Rumor Roundup informed, Evans is alleged to have a 4 year, 44 million dollar offer that can go as high as 50 million with incentives from the New Orleans Pelicans.

That might end being too rich for the Hawks blood, but let's take a look at Evans' numbers, since he hasn't been talked about much nationally since his rookie campaign.

And now his advanced statistics:

From what can we divine here?

We can see that Evans finally got back to his rookie season efficiencies (18+ PER, 50+ TS and .EFG), but he doesn't shoot threes well (28 percent lifetime), averages a mere four free throws a game, and doesn't seem to offer much defensively, according to the breakdown of his win shares and defensive efficiency.

Those numbers don't seem to fit the threes and D mode that we've been projecting to be the order of the day for this Hawks roster and likely why they didn't take Jamaal Franklin in the draft due to concerns about being able to hit the outside shot.

Toss in that Louis Williams is already on this roster and the Pelicans' very generous offer to Evans, who is still just 23, and I would forecast that this is not a match for the Hawks.

Jose Calderon, a soon-to-be 32-year-old point guard from Spain, will meet with Kings management in Sacramento on Tuesday, reports Jorge Sierra of HoopsHype.com.

Calderon spent seven full seasons with the Raptors before being dealt to the Pistons in the Rudy Gay deal at the February trade deadline. The Pistons have reportedly been interested in bringing him back; he started 28 games for Detroit over the back half of last season.

Calderon's major skill is playmaking. For his career he averages nine assists per 36 minutes, has a 4.2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio and has an assist rate of nearly 40 percent. While he's a 40 percent career three-point shooter, he's not too much of a scorer. He is a pretty disastrous defender, and again, will turn 32 in September.

Tuesday Mail Sac: Omer Asik, DeMarcus Cousins, and Vegas Summer League

Kicking off the Tuesday Mail Sac with Adam: "The Rockets are reportedly looking to trade Asik. He would be perfect for us! Rim protector/defensive presence/rebounder/hard player. Just what we need next to Cousins. Man, having a solid defensive center like that might even convince me we don't need to tank for next year's loaded draft, and can build around Cousins and our new draft picks. Well...we'd still need one more big piece, but it'd be closer! The Rockets like shooters, maybe pawn Thornton and Jimmer off on them. Probably not, but a boy can dream."

Well, I do like the idea of Asik. The thing is, I don't think that Houston is just going to give him away. There is a big difference between making players available and having a fire sale, and I think that the Rockets are having the former and not the latter. If/when Houston parts with Asik, it will likely involve obtaining a power forward that works better next to Dwight Howard. The odd thing is that Patrick Patterson would be of that mold, but I think that Asik possesses more value than that. They Rockets could probably trade him for a decent 2014 draft pick, and then turn around and sign Carl Landry.

Now, the guy that would be insane for Houston would be Josh Smith, and that could trigger a more fire sale -like atmosphere, as the Rockets would need to get Asik and Lin off the roster to sign both Howard and Smith. Asik for Isaiah Thomas would work for both teams...Thomas would flourish in a lineup with Harden, Parsons, Smith and Howard. But again, the Rox could opt to trade Asik and Lin for future draft picks, and then sign a free agent point guard like Darren Collison and still stay under the tax level.

Asik to Sacramento is not likely, but certainly not impossible. The one thing that is not going to happen with new ownership and management is anything resembling a tank job, so everyone needs to just forget about that.

From polnius916: I admit it. "I am a DMC fan. I don't think he'll be a perennial all-star, I know it. What I'm not sure about is how many teams he'll play for before then. I hope it's the Kings. So I'm biased. Then again, if the attitude doesn't improve this year I'll gladly bid him adieu.

At any rate, most people who are down on DeMarcus seem to first point to attitude. Namely "pouting" and "complaining to the ref". Now I'm going to make a comparison about pouting and complaining--NOT to game or potential. So bear with me.

Who pouted and complained to the ref more than Michael Jordan? I mean seriously? I remember Game 3 of the Finals vs. the Sonics. The Bulls are on the wrong end of I believe the largest blow out in Finals history at that point. Shockingly, MJ already has one tech. Something happens he doesn't like. He lights into the ref in such a manner that spit is hitting the ref in the face. I'm thinking, "Who besides MJ doesn't get a double tech for this, much less a single?" Yet no tech was called. This is just one example. And in fact, Bird whined a ton too. Yes they were winners. Yes they were all time greats. But is it fair to start criticisms of this 22 year old off with complaints about a standard other players weren't/aren't held to? If the guy can't stay on the court or can't behave at practice that's one thing. But I'm tired of the "pouting" and "complaining" line--and I'm not pointing a finger at any individuals as honestly, I can't name any besides Bill "SportsGuy Walton wannabe" Simmons. It's a double standard, in my opinion. As I recall you are more in the "see ya" camp for DMC than the "hopeful". Fair enough. So I value your opinion all the more. Who whined more than MJ? Is it fair to hold DMC to a higher standard on THAT front?"

Um...

Er...

Uh...

I think that I will defer this one to the thread. If you agree with Polonius, move forward and be fruitful. If you disagree, please remember to hate the play and not the player.

OK, I do need to address one thing, since you specifically asked. I'm not in any "camp" as it pertains to Cousins. I don't think that we should cut him loose at any cost, but he has given me numerous reasons on numerous occasions to be less than hopeful. I'd deal him if a high value deal came along, but due to his attitude and shot selection, those offers are not going to be forthcoming anytime soon. I can't fathom comparing him to Jordan or Bird in any way, shape or form. Do superstars get preferential treatment in the NBA? You bet, and it sucks, and it's been that way forever and is not likely to change anytime soon. I always reference back to this very simple comparison: Greg Monroe and DeMarcus Cousins came out in the same draft, two picks apart. They both play the same position, and they have both had to toil for bad, bad teams during their first three years. And Cousins has amassed 43 technical fouls and 7 ejections (not fouling out, mind you, but ejections), while Monroe sits at 6 and 0. And Monroe has not called out even one coach, while Cousins is two for two. And Monroe has never been suspended, and I've stopped keeping track of Cousins' suspensions.

The "see ya" camp? Nah. I'm in the "see him" camp. As in, I'd like to see him grow up, take ownership of his actions, and start cashing in some of this untapped potential that I keep hearing so much about. And if he can't do that, I'd like to see him leave.

Pick & Droll: Vegas Summer League!

Starting with this note from LaBradford: "Are any StR members planning to go to Vegas Summer League? I went a couple of years ago and enjoyed it. I think Crown Downtown is planning to go, and it might be great to meet up with folks."

I will be there on the first two days (Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th), including the Kings first game of summer, which takes place at 3 PM on Saturday. I will be wearing either my "Cuzizstan" shirt, my "Sactown Royalty" shirt, or my "Small Market Big Heart" shirt. I vaguely resemble a horribly shrunken Ted Leonsis (both physically and financially). And I will be crushed if I find out that you were there and didn't come by and say "hi" or sit with me and betweentheeyes. Man, the idea of watching VSL games with several StR members - that would be pretty awesome. And the best part? It's a ban hammer-free environment! You can even talk politics, and I'm powerless to stop you!!!

So, who's going? When will you be there, and what are your plans? I'm fortunate to have my buddy from Chicago out there to compete in the World Series of Poker, so I get to hang with him and his lovely wife a bit. I'm going to drive, but it will be nice to get away for a few days.

If you've never been, I'd highly recommend it. The basketball is a little ragged, but you literally find yourself sitting right next to rookies (Jared Sullinger sat next to us for a bit last year), and NBA royalty is in the house (shook hands with Kevin McHale and breathed on Jerry West...he's minty!). The best moment last year was watching Darnell Jackson (wearing a KU hat) politely turn away youngster after youngster that came up to him and said, "Mr. Robinson, can I have your autograph?" Great seats. The games are played in either the Thomas and Mack Center or Cox Pavillion, which are joined by a common concourse so that you can go back and forth when games are being played on both floors. Very basic concessions, so I advise that you carb load first if you are going to spend the entire day there.

And most importantly, you could get the first look at Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum. Now the one thing that we've learned is that you can't really set your expectations watch by VSL performances (to wit, Donté Greene once scored 44 points in a VSL game). The games are really built more for wings and guys that create their own shots. But it's still hellacious fun, and exciting as hell to see the new Kings when they are fresh out of the box.

Vegas Summer League. You should do this.

NBA 2013 Free Agency Tracker

20120620_mjr_su5_012

Free agency started, even though teams won't be able to make deals official until the 10th. Here's the PtR off-season primer, where you can find information on the salary cap and all that boring stuff. This is what we have so far in terms of signings and rumors, first on the Spurs and then on other teams.

Spurs

The Spurs have been quiet so far but seem to be thinking about bringing in a big man. They are reportedly interested in trading for Marcin Gortat and signing Zaza Pachulia and might be considering Greg Oden. There's no news on Manu but that's to be expected. Splitter and Neal haven't signed offer sheets yet.

Update: The Spurs are finalizing a deal with Tiago Splitter for four years and $36 million dollars, according to the almighty Woj.

Eastern conference

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have a lot of free agents, including Josh Smith and Jeff Teague but are moving slowly so far. Ivan Johnson didn't receive a qualifying offer and is an unrestricted free agent.

Boston Celtics

The Celtics are hard to read. It seemed like they were ready to tank after trading away their core but Ainge claims that's not true and they might go after Josh Smith or Diwght Howard. Who knows what's going on there.

Brooklyn Nets

The Nets traded for the Celtics' old guys (see above) and will re-sign Andray Blatche. Becaue they have all the money, they also seem very close to landing Kyle Korver. They might make another small signing, probably for a back up PG, but they are probably done for now.

Charlotte Bobcats

The Bobcats seem to be eyeing Al Jefferson. I don't think it's a good idea for them to use their cap space in a good not great center and I'm not the only one. They also tendered a qualifying offer to Gerald Henderson but are letting Byron Mullens be unrestricted.

Chicago Bulls

The Bulls made perhaps the best signing so far when they inked Mike Dunleavy Jr. to an affordable two year deal. It shows how boring the off-season has been so far but it also open up the possibility that Thibs might actually rest Deng this season, considering that the Bulls also have Jimmy Butler and Tony Snell under contract. They are probably looking for a back up PG.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs seem to be interested in a lot of players, Nikola Pekovicamong them. They are also rumored to be the front-runners to get Greg Oden, whom the Spurs are allegedly interested in. With all those big men in the roster, Varejao might be available.

Detroit Pistons

The Pistons are looking to make a splash and are targeting Josh Smith (presumably to play small forward...pray for DBB), Andre Iguodala and Tyreke Evans. They've also expressed interest in O.J. Mayo and PtR favorite Brandan Wright.

Indiana Pacers

The Pacers actually made a good signing, inking C.J. Watson to man the back up PG slot. They seem interested in the underrated Chris Copeland to fill the spot Tyler Hansbrough will probably leave open as a big off the bench and for some reason, might go afterTony Allen.

Update: The Pacers are about to lock down David West for three years and have rescinded their offer to Tyler Hansbrough.

Miami Heat

Ugh. These guys. They might take a look at Greg Oden, apparently. They might also re-sign Birdman. Whatever.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks are one of the most interesting teams in this off-season. They have all three of Monta Ellis, Brandon Jennings and J.J. Redick as free agents and just lost Dunleavy. They also have a ton of bigs.

There are reports that there are ongoing talks to sign-and-trade Redick to the Clippers for Bledsoe and Redick even dined with Doc Rivers. But nothing seems imminent.

Update: Redick is going to the Clippers for two second round picks as a part of a three team deal. This is the guys the Rockets traded first round pick Tobias harris to get. Ugh.

New York Knicks

The Knicks traded for Andrea Bargnani because of course they did. The deal will need some tweaking after being finalized but it basically consists of Novak, Camby, a first rounder and two second rounders to Toronto for the former number one pick. They also seem to be interested in a lot of guys but don't really have cap space so they probabl just make a small signing.

Orlando Magic

The Magic are also interested in Bledsoe and could make a deal with Afflalo as the centerpiece. They are also reportedly interested in Brandan Wright. But they still need to lose to get a cornerstone, so don't expect them to make big moves unless it's to shed salary going to veterans.

Philadelphia 76ers

The Sixers just went all in on the rebuilding effort and traded Jrue Holiday on draft night for Nerlens Noel. For some reason, they might be interested in Omer Asik via trade. But not unlike Orlando, the Sixers are very likely tanking, so don't expect them to make big signings.

Toronto Raptors

When Masai Ujiri stops celebrating the deal he made with New York he might look to shake things up even more. Eric Bledsoeis allegedly a target and so is Brandan Wright.

Washington Wizards

The Wizards signed the back up PG they needed in Eric Maynor. They are als trying to re-sign Martell Webster to provide some outside shooting and might look into bringing back Antawn Jamison. Unless something goes wrong, the Wizards are playoff bound.

Update: the Wizards re-signed Martell Webster to a four-year, $22 million deal. Seems like too much but they really liked him there.

Western Conference

Dallas Mavericks

The pretty ponies are trying to sign-and-trade Mayo for Bledsoe as well, because that's all the rage with the kids this days. Apparently they didn't like having Mike James as their starting points guard, so they didn't extend a QO to Darren Collison and signed Israeli guard Gal Mekel. Oh, and they obviously still hold out hope that Dwight signs with them.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets traded Kosta Koufos, who started for them last season, to make room for Javale McGee so they might need a back up center unless they re-sign Mozgov. Most pressing, though, is the fact that free agent Andre Iguodala is taking meetings with other teams. Oh, and for some reason they are interested in Jarrett Jack even though they have Andre Miller coming off the bench.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors throw their hats on every big free agent discussion even though they have no cap room. They are also trying to trade David Lee and possibly bring back Carl Landry and Jarrett Jack. We'll see what happens but I don't expect big moves.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets seem to be the early front-runner to get Dwight and are also reportedly interested in addin someone else. They have cap space and a valuable trad chip in Omer Asik, so they could make that happen in theory if Lin is included. The Rockets are looking for anther star and will not make moves until Howard decides.

Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers got a verbal commitment from Chris Paul and are looking to lock up free agents Matt Barnes and possible other free agents of their own. They are also looking for a shooting guard, dangling Bledsoe. Afflalo, Tony Allen and Redick appear as options.

Update: the Clippers found their shooting guard in Redick and a solid back up wing in Jared Dudley, as part of a three team trade. They sent out Eric Bledose and Caron Butler to the Suns and two second rounders to the Bucks. Good deal for them.

Los Angeles Lakers

Since the Lakers didn't get any type of commitment from Dwight, they are kind of stuck. But once Howard decides, they will probably look to add a shooter. They have also showed interest in Byron Mullens, for some reason.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies got a very good back up center in Koufos and have Jerryd Bayless back. They will try to bring Tony Allen back and, I'm assuming, a shooter. They didn't extend QO to Jon Leuer or Austin Daye, so they will have the roster space.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Wolves need to figure out what to do with free agents Andrei Kirilenko and Chase Budinger but most importantly, restricted FA Nikola Pekovic. The big man will surely get substantial offers but the Wolves are likely to match. They are also looking at a shooting guard and are ready to make Redick an offer. O.J. Mayo and Kevin Martinare also targets.

Update: The Wolves signed Chase Budinger to a thre-year, $16 million deal. A little steep but they need shooting.

New Orleans Pelicans

The Pelicans got their point guard of the present and future on draft night when they traded for Jrue Holiday and have a great young core. They are looking to add to add and are ready to make an offer to Tyeke Evans. Robin Lopez might be on the block.

Oklahoma City

OKC is trying to sign Dorrell Wright, probably to replace the likely to leave Kevin Martin in the rotation. WWith Steven Adams, the Thunder have a pretty full roster, so I expect them to add a shooter and call it a day.

Phoenix Suns

Asides from the alleged talk with the Spurs about trading Gortat, the Suns have been quiet. With a good stable of big men that just added Alex Len and Goran Dragic running point, I can see the Suns targeting a shooter to complement their wing rotation of PJ Tucker, Michael Beasley and Jared Dudley.

Update: Dudley was traded to the Clippers for Eric Bledsoe and Caron Butler. The Suns are getting a good asset in Beldsoe. Let's see how good he really is.

Portland Trail Blazers

After taking Thomas Robinson off the Rockets' hands, the Blazers are trying to get a starting caliber center and stop LaMarcus Aldridge from bolting. Chris Kaman, Zaza Pachulia, and Omer Asik are all allegedly targets. Of those four, only Kaman and Pachulia are free agents. This could be one of the teams that makes a bid on Tiago but only if Aldridge stays.

Sacramento Kings

The Kings' first priority probably is to retain Tyreke Evans but they are also talking to Andre Iguodala and might be interested in Oden. With McLemore in tow, the Kings are probably looking to get rid of one of Jimmer Fredette, John Salmons or Travis Outlaw. Good luck with that.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz drafted their point guard of the future in Trey Burke and are trying to see if Mo Williams might stick around to do some mentoring but he doesn't seem intersted. They've also reached out to Paul Millsap but not to Al Jefferson, as far as I know. They have a pretty set roster. They only need a shooting guard, so they can move Gordon Hayward to the three.

As always with these trackers, I'll try to update it if something major happens. If you hear something, post it in the comments.

2013 NBA Free Agency: Kings pull offer to Andre Iguodala, no longer pursuing him

Earlier today it was believed that the Sacramento Kings were the leaders to sign Denver Nuggets free agent Andre Iguodala. The Kings had an offer on the table of 4-years and $56 million, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.

At about 11:00 p.m. on July 2nd Iguodala Tweeted out the follow two notes:

Iguodala has been known to be a little cryptic on Twitter and then Sam Amick from USA Today Tweeted the following and was followed up by Woj:

How did the Kings go from being the "favorite" to land the shooting guard to pulling their offer? Only time will tell. Or Amick will ...

Who will be the next top suitor for Iguodala? Will the Nuggets lock up their free agent?

Stay tuned ...

Sam Amick of USA Today is reporting that the Sacramento Kings have pulled their 4-year, $56 million offer that they had previously made to Andre Iguodala.

The coming days should be interesting as we hopefully learn more about what drove this odd series of events.

And how do you feel about this, Mr. Iguodala?

While there were certainly mixed reactions to the news of the initial offer, I'm sure this sudden reversal will be seen as even more controversial.

A bit of speculation: Perhaps the Kings expected Tyreke Evans to walk, but instead he's decided to sign with the franchise? Or maybe he's decided to walk and the Kings need to match that offer, making it impossible for them to also sign Iguodala?

Feel free to toss out your own theories in the comments.

Spencer Hawes of the Philadelphia 76ers, Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings, Quincy Pondexter and Tony Wroten of the Memphis Grizzlies were all fined $15,000 for playing in the first annual University of Washington. For some reason free agent, Nate Robinson and Toronto Raptors guard, Terrence Ross were not fined.

According to the league's new collective bargaining agreement players cannot play in unsanctioned games before July 1 or after September 15th.

The NBA news never stops at this time of year with NBA free agency in full swing, so there are plenty of links and plenty more to come over the next few days.

The Pacers backed up their move to add C.J. Watson on the first day of free agency with a deal to lock up David West and then let Tyler Hansbrough hit the market on day two.

The Summer Pacers convene today at the Fieldhouse to begin practicing before heading down to Orlando for the Orlando Pro Summer League next week. The Pacers will test out some sleeved uniform options while in Orlando which David Benner tweeted about yesterday.

Apparently the Pacers are just giving the unis a go in Orlando and aren't expected to be one of the teams that will trot out the sleeves during the regular season. Although, if they like them for some reason, then that could certainly change. Roy Hibbert for one, would rather stick with the regular look as he tweeted (and then deleted) "keep away" in response to Benner's revelation.

As usual, feel free to add links or other reported rumors and deals in the comments as the dynamic free agency period continues to churn.

Just hours after the Sacramento Kingsoffered a lucrative four-year contract to Denver Nuggets free agent Andre Iguodala, that offer was pulled off the table before the veteran swingman could come to a final decision.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski first reported late Tuesday night that the Kings had offered a four-year, $56 million deal to Iguodala. Shortly thereafter, Iguodala took to Twitter to express some apparent surprise and talked about having motivation.

Some thought it was a sign that Iguodala had accepted Sacramento's offer, but when USA Today's Sam Amick later reported that the offer had been pulled, things made more sense. Both Amick and Wojnarowski said that the Kings pulled the offer because Iguodala wasn't prepared to make a decision quickly enough for their liking. Amick also reported that the deal was actually four years, $52 million.

The move was a bit of a shock to some, although there was a belief out there that the offer was a bit too much to begin with. Over at SB Nation Kings blog Sactown Royalty, there was some speculation that perhaps the decision has something to do with Tyreke Evans:

A bit of speculation: Perhaps the Kings expected Tyreke Evans to walk, but instead he's decided to sign with the franchise? Or maybe he's decided to walk and the Kings need to match that offer, making it impossible for them to also sign Iguodala?

Whatever the case, the Kings are now out of the running and Iguodala could return to the Nuggets to discuss a five-year contract extension.

Howard finishes meetings, to take a few days to decide

Now we wait. Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howardfinished up his free agent tour with a meeting with the Lakers on Tuesday night, and the big man has left Los Angeles for a couple of days to mull over his decision.

Wojnarowski reports that the Houston Rockets remain the frontrunner for Howard's services, but that the Lakers still have a very good shot. Mitch Kupchak, Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash were the three key Lakers figures in the meeting with Howard, trying to sell him on the present and future of the team. Kupchak is "hopeful" that Howard will return to Los Angeles.

If Howard goes to Houston, the Rockets will reportedly also pursue Atlanta Hawks free agent Josh Smith. Howard and Smith were childhood friends in Atlanta, and Howard would like another big name to play with in addition to James Harden.

Martin agrees to deal with Wolves

After reaching terms on a new deal with Chase Budinger, the Minnesota Timberwolves also agreed to a four-year, $28 million deal with Oklahoma City Thunder free agent Kevin Martin. Martin spent just one year in Oklahoma City after being dealt in the Harden trade, averaging 14.0 points on 45.0 percent shooting and 42.6 percent from three.

There was a mixed reaction to this signing. At Wolves SB Nation blog Canis Hoopus, the tone was generally positive, although the realization that Andrei Kirilenko is probably gone was viewed as a bummer. SB Nation's Mike Prada really harped on the Kirilenko angle, saying the loss of the Russian veteran will be a big one and could really hurt the Wolves on defense.

Grizz come to terms on pair of deals

The Memphis Grizzlies retained two of their free agents, coming to agreements on deals with Tony Allen and Jon Leuer. The Allen deal is four years, $20 million, while ESPN's Marc Stein reports that Leuer's deal is three years, $3 million.

Allen was a key part of the Grizzlies' Grit 'n' Grind mantra last year, so retaining the defensive bulldog was a top priority. SB Nation Grizzlies blog Grizzly Bear Blues thinks giving Allen the fourth year may be a bit overkill considering his age, but if that's what was needed to be done to reach an agreement, it's okay.

Smith, Copeland being courted by other teams

The New York Knicks have some competition when it comes to retaining both J.R. Smith and Chris Copeland. Outside of the Knicks, the Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistonsare pursuing Smith and could both make hefty offers if they so choose. It's believed that Smith would prefer to stay in New York, but a lucrative offer could sway his opinion.

As for Copeland, Stein reports that the Indiana Pacers are in hot pursuit, and that they have an offer on the table for the restricted free agent. Copeland would help bolster a Pacers bench that struggled mightily at times last season.
